Starting School...

How did that happen?  On Wednesday, Pete starts school.  Five years ago I was going back to work for a few months before starting maternity leave - suddenly, it seems to be his first term.

In honour of this, we are reading 'Starting School' by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.  I love this book, and Pete does too.  It starts with the first day, as all the children, Gavin and Errol and Sophie and Sushma and David and so on arrive with their mums, dads, brothers and sisters to meet their teacher and see their classroom and find their pegs and have a fun time.  So far, so familiar.  But then it goes on to the next day, and the next, and then to the second week, and the rest of term, right up to the Christmas play.  And it isn't always wonderful - sometimes the children are happy, and sometimes they are sad, or grumpy, or puzzled, or poorly.  My favourite page is about the poor, stressed teacher in the midst of it all, which makes me very glad I don't teach in Reception.

Whenever we put the book down, Pete jumps up and shouts 'I'm going to love my school'.  I really, really hope he does.

And I hope they read good stories.
